Soaps

I am not talking about any detergent. This is about the TV dramas intoxicating a sizable population.I understand that soaps take up a story and elaborate it with number of satelite stories and go on and on.(like Mahabhrat). Unlike series which portray one story in each episode. In our place series are rare but soaps are common and very popular; They are known in our place as serial/megaserial.The popularity is so much that one of my relative in US complained that he has to phone up to India at the proper time meaning not dislocating serial viewing to get proper response from his parents in India. It is common in Indian homes that visitors will have to put up with the unavoidable indifference of the host if the visit interferes with serial timing.Having said that we cannot deny the positive side to it. There is no better company to the elderly than these serials and they almost interract with those charecters as if they are real. It is also a great boon to the youngsters in the house who escape from the nostalgic ruminatins and perseveration of non stop advice and instructions.Where cinema revolves round the man(hero) the serial is always based on women. What I dont understand in Tamil megaserials is a)why one set of women are paragons of virtue who is always a mesochist and shoulder blames and suffer; and another who is a schemer and all the time planning to to destroy others. It appears as if Indian homes are full of these villanous females getting up every morning, scheming to poison someone or plantng a bomb to kill. This gives a wrong cue and need to be censored.b)why all the men are good natured and know the wrong doing but helpless like the valiant elders of Dhuryodhana's court.c)why no charecter talks directly the fact and vague in their communication which irritates the viewer; probably that is what is intended.probably I am naive;media knows better!
