Nagesh-thanks for your mails-some of the quotes and anecdotes are really entertaining.

Basurai was here a few weeks back( having been bitten by the travel bug like many good natured Bengalis)

had the good will to visit us on his return from the south india tour; and spent a couple of quality time with us. He was

mentioning about wanting to hear about rly masala which he enjoys like you!

There is a good book, a biography "The Kalam effect" written by Nair , secy to President.' Once a dignitary was visitng

and at that time there was a burning conflict with that country and every one was worried how the president was

going to tackle during their meeting. Kalam took him to his favourite garden showing him the flora and the fauna and

talked to him about his pet subject "PURA" The visitor was so engrossed that no politics was discussed.

A few years ago few cmds went to Delhi for some mtg ; during lunch break we were all chatting with cmd/nr in his chamber.

one cms from a division with a major workshop arrived in a hurry to meet the cmd/nr and told him there was chaos in that

workshop and is burning; and rushed to meet him for advice and solution. the cmd made him sit and join with us for snacks

and take part in our discussion(which was absolutely empty talk). the visitor got engrossed in the rendtion that he forgot about

the purpose of his visit. He thanked the cmd for entertaining him and greeted us and left to catch his train. Not a word was spoken

about 'the burning workshop'- We reminded our senior about this and his reply was."my guidance would not have made a differene

now he is on his own to take appropriate action being in the field of trouble"!

Dont you see something similar in these two situations?! I call it masterly inactivity.during my days in the chair ,many a time

Ifollowed this with success!
