medical profession

40 years ago when I was a medical student the scenario was different. There were only govt hospitals & a few nursing homes which can tackle only ordinary ailments;sort of social centres of health recuperation.ALL including VIPS,VVIPS OR ABOVE got admitted in those govt hosp spl wards.During my training period I found most of the doctors ,nurses were dedicated with lot of concern for patients. These hospitals were centres of SERVICE and the profession was considered noble. with tech advancement, free market, costly gadgets enter the field. more & more corporate hospitals enter the arena.Few can afford but the non affluent million have to look forward only to the govt hospitals , once centres of good service have deteriorated in all areas including dedication. This is inspite of govt providing 2000 crores or more funds which is mismanaged. Othrwise satisfactory treatment is possible to all those unlucky poor.Throughout India medical profession has become business venture;hospitals are asked to be run like factories.Alas! service, human interraction, personal touch have all become history; patients are no more human beings, they are commodities for profit making.

I joined a good service where I spent long years without compromising on any principles ;good professional satisfaction and do "service" which is difficult in other services and in private practice-that is one of the reasons I did not go for practice after graduation and also after retirement neither practice nor assignments.

A welfare state should be able to provide its last citizen Education & health care. our country has to go a long way ; even the good system of family doctor is disappearing. Some of the developed countries are no exception- a good example is USA.But I was impressed by UK model (NHS) which is followed in some European countries which are the real welfare states.
