letter to a friend-2

hi,

hope you received my previous mail? if not have a look at my blog < roopharitalk.blogspot.com> in random thoughts.

Probably you are all too busy, riding on cloud nine, rejoicing over the gold and bronzes (olympic) -for the first time in

individual category. After the self destruction of our hockey, a gold in hand! Is it the first individual gold for India in the

olympics? If you go into the details of the three medalists, it's clear that their own efforts brought them this glory. It's

sad to note that the two "bronzians" suffered financially. Precious little from the state which wastes lot of money on

unproductive expenditure and not catching the talent available in plenty. Take cricket-so much of hype and money

flows, but see the history from the start of the game - India lost more than it won.Why then so much craze?! Soccer

is so popular in Cal and Kerala but we dont even qualify. why our world class tennis players lack the killer instnct to

clinch the cup. Pondering over this, I can only think of what Kushwant singh said in one of his columns. Let me quote-

"Our country(India) is not a sporting nation but a spectator nation." How true! How many of our die-hard cricket fans

who are glued to the tv sets to watch the cricket match can hold the bat properly! No wonder a country streching

3000plus kms from Cape to Kashmir and 2900plus kms from Bombay to Assam with a billion (young) population

is behind, under -developed chota countries in sports. Will things change for the better like we turned our economy!?
